Student Conference: Debating Communities and Networks
This project formed part of a student-led online conference exploring the role of social media, identity, and digital networks in contemporary society. I contributed a case study titled Power and Participation: The Complex Role of Online Networks in Social Change, which examined how digital activism is shaped by platform governance, affective publics, and algorithmic visibility. The conference allowed for critical interaction with peers and real-time commentary on the evolving dynamics of online communities.
My Role:
As both a presenter and participant, I was responsible for writing and publishing my case study, engaging with peer feedback, and contributing to broader discussions across the conference platform. My work reflected on the tensions between empowerment and suppression within networked publics, particularly through examples such as #EndSARS and the Gaza crisis.
Key Features:
Scholarly exploration of digital activism and networked publics
Engagement with peer feedback and commentary
Cross-referencing of student papers for dialogue and shared insight
Alignment with unit themes including online networks, surveillance, and identity
Tools Used:
Research, Canva, Unisplash
Outcome:
The project fostered thoughtful debate and peer engagement, and my contribution was recognised for balancing critical theory with accessible analysis. This portfolio piece demonstrates my ability to communicate complex ideas, participate in networked learning, and contribute to digital academic spaces.
